Although I do have a personal policy against simply posting links to articles on the web, RCP has a comprehensive editorial roundup for Ted Kennedy, who died from cancer on August 25.

Lower SAT scores this year

Posted by Dennis Shiraev on August 26, 2009

Via Inside Higher Ed, College Board is reporting a drop in average SAT scores for the critical reading and writing sections. While the one point drops are not exactly statistically significant, the growing racial/ethnic gaps are more apparent. Average scores for Asian Americans went up by about 4 points for each section, while scores for blacks and latinos did not have a net increase. Indian Americans did gain an average of 2 points for math and one point for the reading section.

The fastest growing gaps are connected to income. High schoolers whose parents’ income level was “more than $200,000″ had an average increase of about 8 points on every section, with lower incomes corresponding directly to smaller increases in scores. I would hypothesize that the growth and increased usage of test-prep centers explains most of these data changes.

Review Representatives Ousted From Freshman Dorm

Posted by Oliver Renick on August 25, 2009

When I first came onto the Review staff a year ago, I wrote about the leftist intolerance I experienced while distributing copies of the paper throughout my freshman dorm, Clara Dickson Hall. An entire year later, although new freshman were much more receptive, our peaceful and unintrusive distribution entourage (of 2 people) on Monday evening came to a startling end accompanied with arrest threats and acerbic tones.

Apparently, walking through dorms as a non-resident is a high-profile offence. While I acknowledge that this is in fact a rule, we were unaware at the time and were under the impression that any Cornell student could visit other dorms. Given the numerous different club and sport representatives that knocked on my door and attempted to recruit me and my hall mates freshman year (including textbook buy-back, religious groups, charity, etc.), I did not think that such an act was a regularly enforced one that warranted such intense and volatile enforcement.

Regardless, our excursion ended on the fourth floor with hard-nose RA Pat Noonan. As we spoke with students sitting in hallways about our publication, Mr. Noonan listened in from his room and observed until stopping us in the hallway. Mr. Noonan then asked if we were residents in the hall, to which we politely replied, ‘no.’ Without ado, he told us to “then get out.” In an extremely unfriendly and cold manner, RA Noonan reiterated that we must leave immediately and threatened to call the police. As we were escorted out of the dormitory, Mr. Noonan refused our offer of a free copy of the Review, saying, “I am a senior, I’ve been here for four years. I know what the Review is.” Just before leaving, Review representatives and Noonan decided it would be best to take up the manner with the RHD. After finding out the RHD was not in the building at the time, Review reporters left quietly and returned home.

While we now understand that entering a dorm as a non-resident without an escort is against policy, we cannot grasp any idea why we were met with such unwarranted hostility, anger, and threatened arrest. Had he kindly informed of us of dorm policy and asked us to leave we would not have to take issue with his behavior. However, this was clearly not the case and his apparent aversion to the Review organization makes it seem like this could possibly have been a politically-motivated action.

Members of the Review are now aware of dorm policy that was made clear by Mr. Noonan and sincerely apologize to anyone who was offended or unhappy with our unescorted presence in the dorm.

MRM #13

Posted by Dennis Shiraev on August 24, 2009

- Welcome Freshmen! If you’re feeling right in your mind, be sure to check out the Cornell Review at Club Fest! A couple of Review representatives will be visiting Freshmen on North Campus this evening.

- In case you saw/heard all those fire sirens on Saturday night, they were responding to a broken water pipe at Sigma Nu. While inspecting the house for water damages, they discovered a small weed-growing operation.

- Via Bilmes, Cornell Professor Robert H. Frank defends Obama’s stimulus plan and actually says that we need “more stimulus now, not less.” He argues that new stimulus funds must be appropriated to offset cuts in state and local government spending. I don’t disagree with some of his arguments, but I ask why this state/local government assistance wasn’t an essential part of the originally appropriated funds, of which only a fraction have been spent?

- Conservative icon and syndicated columnist Bob Novak passed away last Tuesday. From the linked article by Larry Kudlow: “He was both a conservative icon in terms of his unswerving political beliefs, and a journalistic icon in terms of his unyielding tradecraft.”

- Rose Friedman, economist and wife of Nobel Laureate Milton Friedman, also died earlier this week.

- As American focus shifts from Iraq to Afghanistan, will the country continue to be the “graveyard of empires”? David Peter examines whether Afghanistan will eventually become Obama’s Vietnam.

Summer Recap. Blogging Starts Again Monday

Posted by Dennis Shiraev on August 19, 2009

As the staff of the Cornell Review meanders back to Campus for a brand new Fall Semester, we mark the end of summer blogging at the Cornell Insider. Although there weren’t any blockbuster events to report on like the Black Flags Protest or the Ann Coulter CALS Controversy, an otherwise lackadaisical summer did produce some exciting Cornell-related stories:

- The Cornell Men’s Varsity Lacrosse team advanced to the national championship game against Syracuse, managed to give up a late three goal lead and lost 10-9 in overtime.

- A Cornell Security Breach! left 45,000 current and former students with compromised personal information.

- Ujamaa Director Kenneth Glover was relocated, then temporarily reinstated.

- A new “161 List” for Cornell students.

- Oliver Renick had some issues with the financial aid people.

The summer bloggers will be taking a few days off as we move back to campus, but look for regular blogging to resume Monday, August 24th. In addition to continuing our Monday Reading Madness feature, we also hope to start posting professor interview features and pointing you towards new materials in the Cornell Review.

Whether you’re a new Freshman or a returning student, please get in contact with us if you are interested in writing for the Cornell Review. Also be sure to check us out at Club Fest.

New U.S. News College Rankings Out

Posted by Dennis Shiraev on August 19, 2009

These rankings have been “out” most of the day around the blogosphere, but now it seems that even the people at U.S. News and World Report have leaked their own rankings more than an hour before the midnight release time. Sorry for all those readers who had their popcorn and blankets ready for the midnight  powwow, but we at the Insider felt obligated to share the results.

Cornell dropped to 15th nationally, behind Johns Hopkins but still ahead of our our Ivy League counterparts in Providence. This list still features acceptance and tuition rates from 2008, though, so we’ll be sure to update after midnight if it turns out to be a “bogus leak.”

Apart from the four way clusterf#%k for fourth place (Stanford, MIT, Penn, Cal Tech) and a renewed tie between Harvard and Princeton for 1st, there aren’t too many notable moves in the top 25 to report.

Monday Reading Madness #12

Posted by Oliver Renick on August 17, 2009

- For hockey fans: Bilmes beat me to the report, but it appears that Riley Nash will be sticking around for this upcoming season.

- “IvyGate Science Theatre 3000” on Princeton Review College Lists 2010. Ivies are bolded for convenience. Read the whole thing.

- Shifting the puck away from hockey for once, here’s a very interesting article examining the correlation between ex-NFL men and republicanism.

- The legalization debate sees an interesting perspective in an article written by two law enforcement veterans, where violence and safety of cops is the main subject.

- George Will writes on card games? Interesting.

- Another week and another health care audible called by the White House means another article by the HAMMER!

- Recently, Dennis wrote in thedcwriteup.com about space travel. So did Krauthammer. Here’s a summation of both sides of the argument and an analysis in Economist.

- Not for the first time, the Review appears online at FIRE.com (Foundation for Individual Rights in Education) in a Cornellian’s article about our school’s tendency to censorship. (hat tip to Ryan Lett)
