Solidarity For Gaza?

Tomorrow, some students at Cornell will assemble on Ho Plaza to protest against Israel’s attacks on Hamas. However, this will not be a simple demonstration of protest as the participants have made two specific demands from the University administration-

“1) A statement from the administration condemning the Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip

2) Immediate divestment of the University’s portfolio from companies profiting from the Israeli occupation or otherwise directly complicit in the violation of international humanitarian law in the Occupied Territories”

It is quite conceivable that the University is not likely to agree to any of these outrageous demands. But tomorrow, if either the University officials or the Student Assembly members do even as much as to take notice of this protest, it shall sound the death-knell for intellectual freedom on campus and open a pandora’s box. It is therefore imperative that students, regardless of their position on this sensitive issue, resist such attempts to politicize the official policy of a University that claims to attract students of diverse backgrounds and opinions.

Judging from the turnout, consider Pandora’s box opened.
