AP: Former Pledges Charged in Relation to Desdunes Death

Posted by Oliver Renick on May 5, 2011

The Associated Press reported today that three former SAE pledges were charged with first degree hazing and unlawfully dealing with a child in Tompkins County court. Max Haskin, 19, Ben Mann, 20, and Edward Williams, 19, all pleaded not guilty on Thursday. Another underage defendant was involved.

Williams was also charged with criminal nuisance in the second degree, or knowingly maintaining any premise, place or escort where persons gather for purposes of engaging in unlawful conduct on or about Feb. 25, according to court documents.

According to a Wall Street Journal article, Haskin is a current student and the others are ‘former’ students. Mann was described by his attorney as being suspended. None of the students are listed on Cornell’s student database as of this evening.

While the SAE fraternity, whose recognition was revoked in March, will face the same charges as the former students, nobody has been charged with being responsible for Desdunes’ death.

“Contrary to earlier published reports, the grand jury after a full and thorough investigation has determined that none of these young men is responsible for the death of George Desdunes,” Haskin’s attorney told the Wall Street Journal.

Desdunes, another pledge, and the defendants took part in a voluntary ‘kidnapping,’ according to YNN. Desdunes and another individual were taken to an apartment around 1 a.m. after they had called for a designated driver to pick them up from a bar. The pledges then bound Desdunes’ hands and feet with zip ties and duct tape. The group then played a game where Desdunes was required to answer questions about the fraternity, and if his answers were wrong, he and the other ‘kindapped’ pledge were given water, flavored syrup, sugar or vodka. They were also required to do physical exercises, according to the allegations.

After Desdunes passed out in the car around 5 A.M., the brothers left him in the library of the fraternity house were he was eventually found the next morning. Upon arrival at Cayuga Medical Center, where Desdunes was pronounced dead, his blood alcohol conent was .35 percent.

The charge of hazing stems from the accusation of intentionally or recklessly engaging in conduct creating a substantial risk of physical injury to another person and thereby, caused an injury to the person during an initiation activity. On unlawfully dealing with a child, the grand jury accused the defendants of giving or selling any alcoholic beverage to a person less than 21 years old, according to the Star Gazette.

The three defendants were released without bail. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 1 year in prison.

Bores Wins Student Trustee Election

Posted by Oliver Renick on May 5, 2011

The Insider has learned that Alex Bores ’13 has won the Student-elected Trustee Election.

After a campaign that began with a rap video, Bores primarily contended with candidate Nate Rosen ’13, canvassing the campus for what became a surprisingly intense, and at times heated, Trustee campaign. Bores, the president of Cornell Students Against Sweatshops, emphasized his experience with labor action as an example of his ability to get sh– done if elected.

Bores campaigned on the platforms of increasing transparency between the administration and the Cornell community, referencing the Africana move and the budget cuts of various programs like Theatre and Modern Greek. He also emphasized the importance of student mental health – though that wasn’t unique. It’ll be interesting to see if he can survive his own commitment to go to every UA and SA meeting, and something about conflict minerals.

Also, the Sun is now reporting he has a ‘campaign manager‘. At least the class of 2012 knows who their Commencement speaker will be.

AEM Study: ‘Organic’ Label Makes Regular Foods Seem Better

Posted by Oliver Renick on April 16, 2011

From organicauthority.com

Slapping a simple ‘organic’ label on normal foods makes them more appealing to consumers, says a study by Jenny Wan-chen Lee, a graduate student in the Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management.

In a study with 144 people, participants were given the same food items, one of which was labeled ‘organic,’ and instructed to rate their satisfaction with the items on the basis of 10 qualities such as taste and perceived fat content. Chocolate sandwich cookies, plain yogurt and potato chips were on the menu, as individuals estimated the number of calories each contained and how much they would be willing to pay for the items.

Participants almost always preferred the foods labeled ‘organic,’ perceiving them to be higher in fiber, and lower in fat and calories. Even for the snack foods like cookies and chips, subjects believed the ones with the ‘organic’ label were healthier, even though all the products were the exact same.

So why the discrepancy in assessments of the same items? Cornell investigators believe it to be an example of the ‘halo effect,’ a term used by social psychologists to refer to the bias that occurs when a single positive aspect of an item causes its other properties to become more appealing. If the individuals believed the organic foods were more nutritious, they in turn believed they would taste better. The study was presented this week at the Experimental Biology annual meeting, in Washington, D.C., of the American Society for Nutrition.

Karl Rove Discusses 2012 Election, Obama in Speech at Call

Posted by Oliver Renick on April 13, 2011

Karl Rove began his speech in Call Auditorium today with a story about riding in George H.W. Bush’s boat, which the ex-president pushed up to 54 mph for as long as possible until the secret service agents following began to fall out of sight. Rove then said he’s had a “damn difficult” time giving up swearing for Lent.  It was an appropriate introduction for an hour-long talk in which Rove held a matter of fact and often humorous tone as he discussed the future of 2012 Republicans and the faults of the Obama presidency.

In an event sponsored by the Cornell College Republicans, Rove, the ‘Architect’ of President Bush’s 2000 and 2004 presidential campaigns, told a room packed with faculty and students that the economy and job production would be the biggest issues to address for the 2012 Republican presidential candidates.

“This is the first election in modern times in which there is no clear frontrunner for the Republicans,” Rove pointed out.  “They all have the same three challenges. What’s their narrative? Why shouldn’t it be Obama? Why should it be them?” People want to know, he said, “are you going to be able to bring us together at the end of this? They’re going to have to do something to convince people they’re up to the job.”

Rove said that the American people are looking for a candidate who will be able to bridge the gap between the Left and Right. Obama, he said, portrayed himself as an ‘American state’ candidate, but once elected, acted as a ‘blue state’ president that operated in strict opposition to the Republican Party.

Though he did not mention a likely winner for the Republican presidential nomination, Rove touched on the issues that will be of the greatest importance.

Government spending and the nation’s deficit are “bound up together in a toxic stew for 2012,” he said. “At this rate, deficit will double by 2012 to 80% of GDP. We’re on the same way as Greece except on steroids.”

Rove heavily criticized Obama’s healthcare overhaul, which he said has failed massively and caused business owners to fire employees.

“It’s not just the little guys who are doing this.” Rove said he spoke with a restaurant chain owner with over 100,000 employees who said he’s going to “’get rid of all my insurance coverage, and I’m going to start with me.’ Because it’s too expensive.”

“The government has done such a lousy job signing people up for healthcare and their solution is to come up with another lousy plan for the government to sign people up,” he said. “This is Bernie-Madoff style economics.”

For a man who students protested against outside the auditorium, Rove cracked jokes about Cornellian feelings towards Harvard and retained a jovial manner when a woman in the audience stood up and yelled after displaying what he described must be an illness because her middle finger kept going up every time he looked at her. He also blamed vitriolic political speech not on Fox News, who he said “had done a good job on the opinion side of giving a balance,” but Keith Olbermann, who he chastised for stomping on The Cornell Review during his visit earlier this month.

Rudy Giuliani is Convocation Speaker

Posted by Oliver Renick on April 11, 2011

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani will speak at senior convocation this year.

The 66 year-old Brooklyn native served as NYC Mayor from 1994 to 2001, when he received acclaim from New Yorkers and Americans as a whole for his leadership in the wake of September 11. In 2008, he made a short-lived run for the Republican presidential candidacy.

Among his role as mayor he’s also known as a previous recipient of Time Magazine’s Person of the Year, a guest on Seinfeld, and a man with a characteristic lisp.

Giuliani, a moderate Republican who has traversed political party affiliations, will likely bring a different tone than Pelosi, who spoke for the class of 2010.

Cornell Daily Stun

Posted by Oliver Renick on April 1, 2011

In case you haven’t gotten your paper copy already, we managed to get a hold of today’s special edition of The Cornell Daily Stun. Today’s stories are particularly crazy: the Africana center has said no to extra funding, the Student Assembly created a panel for panel-makers, and the slope day committee secured the ‘Numa Numa Song Kid’ as Slope Day performer.

And in typical Stun fashion, don’t forget the wildly outrageous columns on sex and finance. We must say, it’s some of the best material the Stun staff has put out recently.

Inside the Mind of: Daniel Green ’12

Posted by Oliver Renick on March 29, 2011

DANI Smart Scale design

Dan Green ’12 is the president and CEO of DANI (Dynamic Automated Nutrition Innovations), a local start-up that aims to battle obesity through technology. DANI is a finalist in the Big Idea Competition, and our personal favorite (page 7). The Big Idea finals will be held on April 15 at 4 PM in the Statler Ballroom. This Inside the Mind feature focuses on DANI’s preparations for the competition.

What is the game plan going into the final round? How do you prepare?

We’ve been working a lot on getting everything ready. We have this huge calendar leading up to the Big Idea. Each team member has a series of milestones culminating in the Big Idea competition. We also just recently were the winners of the We Live NY Elevator Pitch competition. There were a lot of great companies there from all over NY state so that was a huge win and a great way to energize everyone moving into the final stretch of Big Idea prep.

Are any changes to DANI to take place before the final round?

Of course. We are always working on improving our technology and building new apps. We just finished a project using DANI technology for a Health 2.0 competition sponsored by Veterans Affairs for people with hypertension and renal disease. With renal patients especially, it is really important to limit phosphorus and protein intake so the application highlighted those nutrients and changed from red to yellow to green in real-time as levels increased for a food item.

Attached is an exclusive sneak peak at our production ready Smart Scale design. We’ve been working on developing partnerships and launching a website as well. The site should be up at eatweighsmarter.com in the next week.

What are the judges looking for in a winner and how does DANI provide that?

This is a tough question. The judges haven’t been announced yet so it’s hard to say what they’re looking for. I’m not too familiar with the other teams but this is Cornell so I’m sure everyone will be really well prepared. It should be a great competition, definitely come check it out on Friday April 15 at 4pm in the Statler Ballroom.

Anything else?

We’re always looking for people to help out and for feedback. If any of the Insider readers are interested in working with DANI, have feedback (positive or negative) or just want to learn more please send me an email (dpg64@cornell.edu).

Here’s a link to one of our surveys. It takes less than 5 minutes to complete but really helps us better understand customer wants and needs. We’d also love to co-sponsor events (especially food and health related ones!). If your club or group is interested, again feel free to reach out to me anytime.
