Notre Dame is Number 1 Executive Producer in Finance
Posted by Peter Bouris on August 6, 2010
Apparently Notre Dame leads all schools in producing executives at ‘top’ financial firms. Cornell, Harvard, Colgate, and Penn all tied at second. Notre Dame’s undergraduate Mendoza (this name is associated with mediocrity in baseball) School of Business is the top undergrad business program in the country, according to BusinessWeek.
Of course, the term ‘top’ financial firm is somewhat loaded. One of the Notre Dame CEOs referenced was the chief at PNC Financial Services Group. While this is certainly respectable, I am not sure one can consider any financial firm without a location in Manhattan/Jersey City as a ‘top’ financial firm. Another firm mentioned was Erie Indemnity, a company that I have never heard of despite living minutes from the shore of Lake Erie (Erie Indemnity is located in Erie, PA, about an hour from my house). In other words, this entire story seems to be an attempt to marginalize the superiority of Ivy League schools (how condescending am I?). Saying that the best schools do not produce as many leaders in the world’s most competitive industry serves to diminish their luster.
But I am interested to see the number of ‘top’ financial CEOs relative to student body size. My guess is that the Notre Dame leprechaun would not look quite as tough.

Red Lenses
Posted by lukepolicastro on May 17, 2010
Thanks to an anonymous donor, the Review recently gained access to a pair of glasses worn by Nancy Pelosi. Using them, we captured this depiction of how a liberal might see Goldwin Smith Hall.
Pretty rosy, huh?

Infrared Slope

The mighty slope seems a little neglected during finals. But there were people – this long exposure just didn’t capture them.

Stop. Llama-time
Posted by Oliver Renick on May 10, 2010
“Oh no! Look, there’s a horse!” exclaimed an excited female Ivy League-er as she spotted what is obviously a llama hanging out on Ho Plaza. Perhaps Cornell should offer an entry-level animal identification course in lieu of the soon-to-be(?) dissolved Russian studies program.
In an apparent effort to ease the pain of finals week, Cornell Minds Matter is giving away food, a few other things, and providing relief by allowing people to… touch fluffy animals? This is has got to be at least the fifth time I’ve seen some kind of camelid drawing a crowd around Ho Center.
But really, what is the obsession with llamas? Frankly I’m getting just a little tired of these even-toed ungulates crowding my walking space. They’re everywhere, all the time. I won’t be surprised when there’s a giraffe at the next frat party pressuring me to take a 40-ft beer bong.
For once I’d like to infiltrate the giant crowd of ecstatic Cornellians to find them clamoring around something a little more exciting; an alligator, a free-money giveaway, a Jessica Alba look-a-like contest with auction, a washed-up Full House actor… or something. But until then I guess we should all get a little more accommodated with llamas. For whoever it was that thought this shaggy creature was a horse, allow me provide a diagram (with actual scientific

Celebrate!!
Posted by Oliver Renick on April 22, 2010
All that’s missing is the notice below it which reads ‘Now accepting applications for armed violent demonstrations.’ But seriously, is this some sort of honorary move? Or are they just preserving the authenticity of the day it was taken over? What is going on here?

New A&EP Building Taking Shape
Posted by Oliver Renick on April 18, 2010
Being exposed as frequently as we are to it, it’s often easy to forget how beautiful Cornell’s campus really is. Looking out of my study carrel on Olin 7th floor, one can see the sun’s setting rays bouncing off the new glass-covered Applied and Engineering Physics building.
