AP: Former Pledges Charged in Relation to Desdunes Death

Posted by Oliver Renick on May 5, 2011

The Associated Press reported today that three former SAE pledges were charged with first degree hazing and unlawfully dealing with a child in Tompkins County court. Max Haskin, 19, Ben Mann, 20, and Edward Williams, 19, all pleaded not guilty on Thursday. Another underage defendant was involved.

Williams was also charged with criminal nuisance in the second degree, or knowingly maintaining any premise, place or escort where persons gather for purposes of engaging in unlawful conduct on or about Feb. 25, according to court documents.

According to a Wall Street Journal article, Haskin is a current student and the others are ‘former’ students. Mann was described by his attorney as being suspended. None of the students are listed on Cornell’s student database as of this evening.

While the SAE fraternity, whose recognition was revoked in March, will face the same charges as the former students, nobody has been charged with being responsible for Desdunes’ death.

“Contrary to earlier published reports, the grand jury after a full and thorough investigation has determined that none of these young men is responsible for the death of George Desdunes,” Haskin’s attorney told the Wall Street Journal.

Desdunes, another pledge, and the defendants took part in a voluntary ‘kidnapping,’ according to YNN. Desdunes and another individual were taken to an apartment around 1 a.m. after they had called for a designated driver to pick them up from a bar. The pledges then bound Desdunes’ hands and feet with zip ties and duct tape. The group then played a game where Desdunes was required to answer questions about the fraternity, and if his answers were wrong, he and the other ‘kindapped’ pledge were given water, flavored syrup, sugar or vodka. They were also required to do physical exercises, according to the allegations.

After Desdunes passed out in the car around 5 A.M., the brothers left him in the library of the fraternity house were he was eventually found the next morning. Upon arrival at Cayuga Medical Center, where Desdunes was pronounced dead, his blood alcohol conent was .35 percent.

The charge of hazing stems from the accusation of intentionally or recklessly engaging in conduct creating a substantial risk of physical injury to another person and thereby, caused an injury to the person during an initiation activity. On unlawfully dealing with a child, the grand jury accused the defendants of giving or selling any alcoholic beverage to a person less than 21 years old, according to the Star Gazette.

The three defendants were released without bail. The charges carry a maximum sentence of 1 year in prison.

IPD Investigators Consulting With DA on Desdunes Death

Posted by Oliver Renick on March 4, 2011

The Ithaca Police’s ongoing investigation into the mysterious death of SAE undergrad George Desdunes ’13 has led investigators to speak with several students directly involved with Desdunes at the time, a press release said. Police are now cooperating with the District Attorney’s office to determine the best course of action.

The initial investigation has established the names of several people that were associated with the victim and involved with the fraternity.

An intensive police investigation is continuing into the events that took place involving the fraternity and the sequence of events that may have contributed to the cause of death.

MetaEzra on George Desdunes ’13 and The Greek System

Posted by Cornell Insider Staff on March 2, 2011

While the details of last Friday’s tragic death of George Desdunes ’13 are still unclear, MetaEzra has published a thought-provoking post on the big picture issues of this incident. All of his speculations are likely to be big points of discussion in the coming weeks and months:

– Imagine that instead of Desdunes’s untimely death, he only was hospitalized. Would the fraternity still have been suspended for violation of University alcohol policy?

– Imagine that nothing afoul would have come out of SAE this past weekend. Would it still have been suspended for (pretty much assumed) violation of the University’s alcohol policy?

– Imagine that instead of letting the Greek system persist through the 50s and 60s, Cornell would have decommissioned the entire system like many other colleges did during that time (e.g.Williams) and instead developed small, co-educational living-leaning houses and co-ops. Would Desdunes still have died?

– Or alternatively, imagine that Cornell had developed a residential college experience for all underclassmen (freshman and sophomores) as part of Rawlings’s residential initiative, banning Greek system involvement until later on in a student’s academic career (much like Dartmouth). Would Desdunes still have died?

I’m not trying to point fingers, but it’s something to think about. Institutions matter. Culture matters. The environment we create for ourselves matters. And clearly we are all in some way responsible.

University Suspends SAE Fraternity

Posted by Oliver Renick on March 1, 2011

Cornell has imposed an interim suspension of Sigma Alpha Epsilon, the fraternity where sophomore George Desdunes ’13 was a brother, according to the Cornell Chronicle. He was found unresponsive in the chapter’s house Friday morning and later died at Cayuga Medical Center.

The article says that SAE was determined to have violated the university’s recognition policy, which outlines the rules and methods a Greek chapter must abide by to remain active. The policy recently underwent changes last semester regarding rush and pledge processes.

Cornell officials said that information they have received about the use of alcohol during the events of Feb. 25 is sufficient to conclude that the fraternity had likely violated the university’s recognition policy.

President’s Message on Sophomore’s Death

Posted by Oliver Renick on February 27, 2011

[UPDATE]: Tompkins County Sheriff Ken Lansing said the deaths of Vicky Chen of Ithaca College, found dead in Ithaca Saturday afternoon, and George Desdunes ’13 are probably alcohol-related. “It appears to be young people overindulging in alcohol, that’s what all indications are,” Lansing told the Ithaca Journal this evening. “Although we don’t know for certain in the case of the Cornell student, we’re waiting on an autopsy for that.”

Cornell University president David Skorton issued his first public message regarding the death of George Desdunes ’13 this afternoon. The message of Skorton’s statement offered condolences to the Desdunes family, but took on a slightly different tone than previous such messages regarding student tragedies.

I understand there will be speculation about the causes of this terrible tragedy. A comprehensive investigation regarding all the circumstances surrounding this loss of life is underway under the direction of the Ithaca Police Department, with the support of the New York State Police and Cornell Police.  Once it is complete and we have all the available facts, we will inform the community and share decisions regarding the appropriate course of action.
